There are millions of cars labelled as being compatible with a dead media device because it was the most popular MP3 player. Kind of weird when you think about it. Photo from my girlfriend’s 2015 Elantra  GT, when the iPod was on its way out.

And just as many bedside clocks with the 30 pin iPod/iPhone  plug scattered through hotels across the country.

Oh that's true. Even a lot of high-end properties still have old ipod connections

Thet still do sell the iPod to this day, so it’s not that crazy to think that they might’ ve had iPod users 4 years ago. No too mention, while it says iPod, aux is not exclusive, so writing the word ipod basically means nothing anyway

On the Apple site the iPod is no longer there. At least, under its own header. There’s just the iPod Touch under music.

I don’t have a cassette deck so I’m stuck using a FM transmitter which is terrible but gets the job done

Those transmitters are the devil. Work great for a few days, never work again on that frequency for six weeks.

I wonder if ever car company that did that had to pay Apple, seems they’d have to.

If that’s the case it’s surprising that Apple let it happen as most companies don’t want their trade marked word to end up in a Band-Aid/SawsAll/ KleeneX  situation where it becomes a cover-all for anything that resembles the original

My bad, I legitimately thought the iPod was no longer a thing. I haven’t used an iPod Touch since one of the first ones on iOS 3.

You can plug an iPhone into that and get the same effect..

Into the USB slot? Not usually.

Into the Aux, yeah.

As far as I can tell plugging into the USB with an iPhone/iPod gives you the ability to use all the controls on the steering wheel and radio, the fast forward and rewind stuff.

My girlfriends does anyways and she has a 2010 Kia something.

Expensive, and I’m not sure if it will work for you, but so totally worth it if it can . I have one in my Volvo and it’s great to have Bluetooth (you can buy an aux jack add-on separately if you prefer that for whatever reason ), and have all the built- in controls work. Basically a Bluetooth adapter that pretends to be a CD changer, so it can hijack the playback controls.

A lot of them do support any USB device that presents itself as mass storage. It really depends on how tight the Apple integration is.

I’m sure they paid some certification fee. Probably well worth it from marketing factor anyway.

I don’t even have a cd changer but I’ll see if that is compatible. Thanks for the tip!

The weird thing is that, as someone who still uses an iPod, I much prefer to plug it into the aux port so I can select what’s playing with the iPod rather than having to do it through the stupid entertainment system.

Most luxury cars of the era had the connection for a CD changer even if the car didn’t come with one from the factory (simplified part selection, and let changers be sold as dealer installed options). But yeah, sometimes it can be confusing (I recall Subaru being a mess).

And of course installation can vary widely in difficulty, in my S40, you could get to the back of the head unit by releasing two clips and pulling it out, whereas in the S60, I had to pry up the trim around the shifter, then release the shifter from that, then unscrew the center stack, and then awkwardly pull the whole thing forward (in a car that will apparently throw an SRS light if you accidentally disconnect the radio while the car is powered?)

Still, if you can do it, I highly recommend it. Great way to get modern audio while retaining functional controls and the correct look.

If there isn’t a dedicated solution for your car, a wired fm modulator will work for any car.

The AUX jack is even funnier given the range of now redundant brand name sources you can plug in there: Walkman and Discman come immediately to mind

An iPods an iPod, it plays mp3s, it's followed the lineage of iPods, it's not like you can just call something something else because you don't think it's as similar to the original in it's current iteration.

But it doesn’t follow the lineage of iPods. It didn’t come out until after the iPhone. It runs the iPhone’s OS. It shares almost all its parts with the iPhone. It has nothing whatsoever in common with the iPods that preceded it besides the name that Apple slapped on the box. I’ll use physical properties over corporate branding in my ontology, thank you very much.

If you ask me, it isn’t. The only iPods they sell now are literally  iPhones without a cell radio.

I wish my car had one of those. I bought a 2012 when the 2013s were out, and the 2013s have it. But I saved 20% by buying the old model, so that helped soften the blow. At least it’s got the aux input, which I have put to good use.

I made  my own adapter thingy and integrated it into the dash using a factory switch. It functions quite nicely, but these days I rarely drive long distances (my commute to work went from 20 miles down to 2) so I don’t have an opportunity to listen to a lot of music, audiobooks or podcasts.

I read into the topic for the Audi Concert 2 radio and it seems to be a plug and play solution. There’s even an adapter so you don’t have to mess with the pins.
